The flag serves a reminder that Newton County is, always had been, and always will forever be, the home of Gold Star Communities. The cluster of stars in the northwest corner of the flag represents that part of Joplin and her suburbs which lie within the boundaries of Newton County. Using population figures and historical data provided by County statistics the stars are Placed geographically to represent towns and villages. Gold letters surrounding the star state “Newton County Missouri 1838”. Slightly off center on the flag is the largest star which depicts the County Seat located in Neosho. In keeping with the United States Flag the color blue stands for “vigilance, perseverance, and justice” and the stars represent “the heavens and the divine goal to which man has aspired from time immemorial.” These gold stars represent the villages, towns, and cities of Newton County.
Harvey County is approximately ten miles north of the City of Wichita. As designed, the new flag has an Old Glory Blue field with gold stars scattered across the flag. The Park Board regularly sponsors or spearheads local run/walk events, this includes the Newton County Run Series. The Park Board is working to get designated cycling routes. We have held three cycling events since 2018 on various routes to great success.

The fishing derbies are considered the most popular events sponsored by the Park Board possibly due to the low registration costs and prizes. Both events are held at Willow Slough Fish and Wildlife Area. The Newton County Park Board holds two fishing derbies during the year: the Fishing Derby held in June and the Ice Fishing Derby held in February. Newton County does not have a dedicated tax rate for parks, so the Park Board must prepare and submit an annual budget to the county council. Monthly meetings are generally focused on event planning, and creating partnerships. Newton County Recreation Commission, Covington Rotary Club, Covington Kiwanis Club, The Covington & Oxford Lions Clubs and The Friends of Newton Parks have.
The board was given the power to acquire and develop sites, facilities, and park programs. The Newton County Parks and Recreation Board was first established in 1985 by the Newton County Council. “The mission of the Newton County Parks and Recreation Board is to partner with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and other agencies to develop educational and recreational opportunities for the citizens of Newton County and the region.”
